Associate Provost and Institute Manager speak to ABC about cultural heritage protections and repatriation

Professor Marcia Langton AO, Associate Provost, and Aurora Milroy, Institute Manager at the Indigenous Knowledge Institute appeared on ABC TV's The Drum in June to discuss cultural heritage protections and repatriation.

The Panel discussed the destruction of Juukan Gorge, the return of Indigenous cultural artefacts from overseas institutions, Black Lives Matter protests and corporate activism.

Professor Langton, commenting on the Juukan Gorge case, expressed deep concerns about the loss of cultural heritage at the site and pointed to an array of problems in current cultural heritage and Native Title regimes.

Speaking on why the return of cultural artefacts is important for Indigenous people, Aurora noted that, "The question shouldn't be why do communities want them [cultural artefacts] back, but museums should be having to justify why they want to keep them."
