Accessing kun-borrk/manyardi: A pilot song library for Western Arnhem Land
This project will work with the Bininj Kunwok Regional Language Centre in Jabiru and Injalak Arts and Crafts Centre in Gunbalanya to pilot a mobile song library for online and offline access.
The library will consolidate recordings of kun-borrk/manyardi and associated metadata from different collections where the metadata is currently not relationally linked with recordings.
Collections include Songs from Western Arnhem Land Australia in the Endangered Languages Archive, and AIATSIS collections including recordings by Hiatt (1976), Marett (1986–87), Coleman (1984–90), and Garde (1997), as well as Brown’s collection (2011–19) held by PARADISEC.
Access to Bininj/Arrarrkpi people will be delivered through the Bininj Kunwok Regional Language Centre via an online cloud in towns such as Jabiru, Gunbalanya, Warruwi and outstations including Manmoyi.
To enable online cloud delivery, collected metadata and recordings will be cross-walked to PARADISEC for organisation into a Raspberry Pi using the PARADISEC Repatriation Device Dataloader.
Issues concerning permissions and use of recordings and Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property will be discussed and worked through by the team in collaboration with the Bininj Kunwok Regional Language Centre and the Karrinahnan Mankarre Advisory Council made up of Bininj/Arrarrkpi people.
